Using the Plan

Marine farm underwater

The result of the Sea Change – Tai Timu Tai Pari process will be a plan that protects the health, productivity and sustainability of the Hauraki Gulf. It will give more clarity and certainty to people and groups who use the space – as well as the agencies who manage the gulf and its resources.

The Sea Change – Tai Timu Tai Pari plan itself will be non-statutory. In other words, the plan itself will not have legally binding outcomes. It will, however, provide a strong framework to guide the management of the Hauraki Gulf. Sitting  side by side with iwi management plans, information from the Sea Change – Tai Timu Tai Pari plan will be used to inform changes to unitary, district, regional and coastal plans and any relevant policies, rules and regulations. This will include changes affecting land use in the catchments that drain into the gulf to manage sedimentation and contamination.

The plan may also be used to identify areas of recreational value and develop sustainability measures – such as fisheries plans  – under the Fisheries Act.The Sea Change – Tai Timu Tai Pari Project Steering Group will ultimately be responsible for recommending the plan to relevant councils and agencies, for implementation through their activities.
